Seaweed sample protocol on the way

2020-03-05

An important milestone within the Food Safety Pilot is within reach: a sample protocol for seaweed! The Food Safety pilot for seaweed is being executed by Wageningen Food Safety Research in collaboration with Noordzeeboerderij, commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

The aim of the pilot is to gain insights into the sampling strategy for Ulva sp. and Saccharina latissima to make it possible to formulate a representative statement about the concentrations of heavy metals, inorganic arsenic and iodine in these seaweeds. Within the first year of the project, we have researched how many samples are needed and how these samples should be taken in order to make a well-founded statement about the lab analysis.

This information is brought together in a protocol, which is almost ready and up for publication. As soon as we have news, we will share it on our news page or you can keep an eye on the Food Safety project page.
