B’ZEOS: Turning Seaweed into Scalable & Sustainable Packaging Solutions

2026-03-06

For B’ZEOS, seaweed is not a niche material or a marketing story. It is a core strategic raw material with the potential to replace fossil-based plastics at industrial scale.

Operating from Switzerland with an R&D laboratory in Spain, B’ZEOS is a blue tech company redefining sustainable packaging through the use of seaweed. Their mission is clear: to support EU brands with the shift from fossil fuel-based packaging to sustainable alternatives that are easy to implement within existing manufacturing systems.

At the core of B’ZEOS’ technology are seaweed-based biopolymers processed into pellets via extrusion. These pellets are designed to function as a direct alternative to petroleum-based pellets and can be integrated into conventional plastic packaging conversion processes.

The company describes this approach as “plug and play”. Their materials are compatible with existing conversion lines, enabling manufacturers to adopt seaweed-based materials without major infrastructure changes.

All pellet grades are fully bio based, home compostable, and developed with green and low energy processing. The materials are intended to disappear naturally at the end of life, without leaving microplastics behind.

Why seaweed

Seaweed offers a compelling environmental profile. It grows without arable land or freshwater, requires no fertilisers or pesticides, absorbs carbon dioxide and excess nutrients, and contributes to marine ecosystem health.

B’ZEOS sources seaweed from multiple geographic regions, including the Nordics, North Africa and North America, selecting feedstocks based on functional properties and formulation needs. This diversified sourcing strategy supports scalability while allowing for tailored material performance.

Scaling within the value chain

One of the key challenges remains cost competitiveness. Seaweed based materials must reach acceptable pricing while delivering performance that meets industry expectations. According to B’ZEOS, the goal is not to create a perfect material, but to develop commercially viable solutions that can compete in real markets, which B’ZEOS aims to achieve for market entry.

Collaboration also plays a central role. B’ZEOS works with biorefineries, converters and brand owners to pilot applications, refine formulations and align performance with client requirements. The company does not position itself as a packaging producer, but as a materials partner (“compounder”) supplying pellets that can be converted into finished products.

Looking ahead

B’ZEOS aims to scale its pellet production into large scale production and further integrate its materials into existing packaging value chains across Europe.

Their long-term ambition is not simply to offer an alternative material, but to help establish seaweed as a mainstream industrial feedstock within the transition away from fossil-based plastics.

As regulation tightens and demand for bio-based solutions grows, B’ZEOS is positioning itself at the material level, where true systemic change begins.
