Intramar is a specialist insurance broker for companies operating in the offshore energy sector. With deep roots in the maritime industry, Intramar combines technical expertise with a personal, tailored approach to risk management. We interviewed Nico de Wit, founder of Intramar, about the company and his story.
Who are you and what is your background?
My name is Nico de Wit. I started my career in the maritime sector, working for seven years for Adriaan Volker on trailing suction hopper dredgers. Later I worked on the Ostrea, a special vessel built to lift the concrete piles of the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier. After the birth of my daughter, I wanted to spend more time at home and switched to a land-based career. I spent several years working for an insurance company (AMEV, now ASR) and later joined an insurance broker specialising in maritime and offshore risks. I founded Intramar in 1994.
What does Intramar do?
Intramar is a specialist insurance broker focusing on companies operating in the offshore/energy sector. We serve a wide range of clients, from small businesses to major players in the offshore and wind energy sectors. We also support many professionals, such as offshore divers and rope access specialists, with unique insurance needs.
What challenges are you facing?
The offshore industry faces significant labour shortages and is highly sensitive to geopolitical developments. We also see sectoral differences: offshore wind tends to shift risk to suppliers, while in oil and gas the larger companies tend to retain the risk. In addition, finding insurers willing to underwrite offshore risks remains an ongoing challenge.
What developments do you see in the market?
The offshore wind sector is growing rapidly, with exciting technical innovations, for example in corrosion protection. We are seeing increased demand for international insurance solutions to cover projects in countries such as Brazil or more remote, higher-risk regions. Clients also expect assistance with local insurance and medical arrangements close to project sites.
