current offshore pilots

At the North Sea Farmers Test Site we are able to facilitate pilot initiatives in order for them to demonstrate the viability of seaweed cultivation as well as other forms of multi-use for application within wind farms. This is in line with our ambition to grow the seaweed sector towards 400km2 of offshore seaweed cultivation between wind farms in the Dutch North Sea.  

Below you find our current pilots. These pilots are conducted by different Farmers and each have their own research goals. 

PLOT 1: IMPAQT PILOT

In plot 1, an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system will be tested, with both seaweed and mussels. This pilot will be equipped with a sensor setup in order to gather information on temperature, light, conductivity, salinity, chlorophyll-A, turbidity and current. Additionally, nitrate, phosphate and ammonium measurements will be taken. This data will be used for both the development of an intelligent management system (IMS) as well as for the development and validation of modelling tools of Deltares. Starting in October 2019 till June 2020.

PLOT 2: OCEANS OF ENERGY - FLOATING SOLAR

In plot 2, Oceans of Energy together with their project partners MARIN, ECN, TNO part of ECN, ONEBV andTAQA, is testing their design for floating solar to gain insight on how the design works under offshore conditions. Project started in November 2020.

PLOT 3: THE SEAWEED COMPANY 

In plot 3, The Seaweed Company is testing two seaweed cultivation systems (Cultivator 1 & 2) as part of the European project UNITED. These Cultivator systems are developed with the Offshore Seaweed Systems consortium and will be tested for two growing seasons. With this pilot, a big step towards large scale offshore seaweed cultivation is taken.

PLOT 6: NATURE RESTORATION

De Rijke Noordzee aims to strengthen biodiversity in offshore wind farms at the North Sea by building coastal reefs and spawning oysters: a powerful combination of sustainable energy production and nature development. With their project, they want to develop a blueprint for nature restoration in all offshore wind farms. This requires research on the type of reefs at different locations at the North Sea. One of those location is the North Sea Farmers Test Site. The test period lasts for about 4 years, until 2024.
